Occupational Hygiene Monitoring

Environics was engaged by Goodline May 2018 to conduct occupational hygiene monitoring, inspections and assessments of the Mission River bridge which is currently, as at the date of this update, undergoing steel and paint remediation. The bridge is owned by Rio Tinto who contracted Goodline as their principle contractor. Their scope of works included the removal of paint from the bridge using the method referred to as grit blasting. Grit blasting is done under strictly controlled conditions that includes an air sealed enclosure with decontamination facilities, and a negative air ducting system that separates course materials to a hopper from the fine air-borne materials that are fine filtrated and exhausted from an outlet of the unit located on a barge moored adjacent to the bridge.

Prior to work commencing the paint(s) of the bridge were sampled at numerous locations and analysed by a laboratory for contaminants. The laboratory analysis found two hazardous contaminants, namely lead and asbestos. In relation to paint containing lead it is reasonable to say that the entire bridge is contaminated with lead based paint because numerous samples at many locations across the bridge tested positive for lead. In relation to paint containing asbestos it is reasonable to say that a majority of the bridge is not contaminated because numerous samples at many locations across the bridge did not detect asbestos.

The role of Environics Technician is to assist Goodline meet their obligations under relevant Work Health Legislation in relation to managing and monitoring the occupational health impacts and aspects of the project. Our work involves the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace conditions that may have a potential to cause impaired health or significant discomfort among workers or the surrounding community.

Your sincerely,
Environics
